Introduction

Could you believe that a Baekje earthen fortress once stood around Yeongdong-daero and Gyeonggi High School? That's Samseong-ri Earthen Fortress. Traces of the fortress — built by piling earth on high ground — extend from the hill between Bongeunsa Temple and Gyeonggi High School eastward to Bongeun Middle School and Cheongdam Reservoir Park. Apgujeongji, the origin of the Apgujeong-dong name, was a riverside pavilion where the powerful Joseon-era official Han Myeong-hoe spent his retirement by the Han River. Today, only a stone marker inscribed 'Apgujeongji' remains behind Hyundai Apartments Building 74. In front of Bongeunsa Temple stands a marker for Seunggwapyeong — the open field where Buddhist monks took civil service examinations, a practice dating back to the Goryeo Dynasty. The site is now occupied by COEX, the international convention center.
