Introduction

'Bulguksa' brings to mind the famous temple in Gyeongju for most people, but Gangnam has its own Bulguksa. Daemosan Bulguksa was founded in 1353 by Monk Jinjeong-guksa during the reign of King Gongmin of Goryeo. While 600 years younger than Gyeongju's Bulguksa, it is older than Jogyesa Temple in Seoul's Jongno (1396). The temple's small 80-cm Buddha statue — with its oversized head and narrow shoulders, resembling a cartoon character — is registered as Seoul Cultural Heritage Material No. 36 as the 'Ilwon-dong Bulguksa Stone Seated Figure.'
