Introduction

Designated Seoul Metropolitan Government Monument No. 29, the tomb site of Wannam Buwongun Yi Huwon. Yi Huwon was a 7th-generation descendant of Grand Prince Gwangpyeong who served as Right State Councilor in the 8th year of King Hyojong's reign and was a leading Neo-Confucian scholar of late Joseon, credited with discovering and recommending Song Si-yeol and Song Jun-gil for government service. The tomb was relocated multiple times — from Samseoksan in Geumcheon to Segok in Gwangju — before being established at its current location in 1704 as a joint burial with his first wife (Lady Kim of Gwangju) and second wife (Lady Shin of Yeongwol). Notably, protective stonework and haechi (mythical guardian animal) statues surround the burial mound. Worth examining on a stroll are the tomb markers, epitaphs, and supplementary inscriptions — they bear the calligraphy of prominent Confucian scholars and master calligraphers of the era.
